Dickerman Playground

The renovation of Dickerman Playground transformed two levels of barren concrete into a vital, colorful play space for all ages in the heart of a Somerville neighborhood. A local school became involved with creating ‘bug artwork’ that became the theme for the renovated park.

Enclosed by a massive stone wall, entrances were punctuated with colorful butterfly archways and steel gates. The upper level basketball court was renovated separately with new color surfacing and a wall mural created by a local summer youth arts program. The lower level playground was recreated with a new swing area, two play structures designed for different age groups, benches, boulder seats, planting, and a water feature with colorful ‘stream’ graphics laid in accessible rubber surfacing. The vibrant colors of nature now occupy this densely urban park.
